EU 50 Years Of CRANK

Bandleader Gregory “Sugar Bear” Elliot, founding manager Charles C. Stephenson Jr., and scores of DC musicians gathered in part of a massive documentation project that identified more than 120 living and ancestor members of musicians and advocates who developed EU’s signature blend of joyous, community-engaged music. At this July 10th, 2021 reunion at the legendary go-go venue, The Panorama Room, 1600 Morris Street, S.E. Washington, D.C., on the grounds of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Roman Catholic Church, many musicians saw each other for the first time in decades.

Experience Unlimited

In 1971, a group of Hart Middle School students in Washington’s Anacostia neighborhood gathered to form the Experience Unlimited Band. Fifty years later, EU remains a powerful cultural force with a repertoire that spans funk, rock, and go-go. They toured globally with their Billboard hit “Da Butt,” featured in Spike Lee’s 1988 film ‘School Daze,’ and more recently drew headlines for their Don’t Mute DC-themed performance at the 2019 BET Music Awards. Last year, their music helped power Juneteenth protest parades to Black Lives Matter Plaza outside the Trump White House.

About EU

Aptly called Experience Unlimited, because of their ten year music tradition, E.U. was greatly influenced by Jimi Hendrix in their beginning. The group’s music has ranged from hard rock, jazz, rhythm and blues, and now, these nine musicians, who all hail from the “Nations Capitol”, comprise D.C.’s leading FUNK sound.

Experience Unlimited has produced and released three recordings, “Rock Yer Butt”, released in 1979 had mild success. In 1980 E.U. had two of the most popular recordings in the Washington- Metropolitan area. “The E.U. Freeze” and the flip side “Knock Him Out Sugar Ray”, sold more than 30,000 copies.
